Pat Cummins has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.
The Australian selection chief the selector has confirmed that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's Ashes series.
Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.
Earlier indications from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on November 21 in Perth.
The selector shared that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the prospects of being involved.
"We know that the window is narrowing and there are permutations at play, aside from the physical problem, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.
"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he's going to play a major part. Hopefully starting in Perth. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."
Injury History
The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand last month after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.
There is a track record of spinal problems, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.
Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the Ashes.
Bailey noted that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the initial match.
Alternative Arrangements
In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.
The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against India as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.
The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."
"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.
"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs regardless. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for a short period, we opted to take a cautious route."
