Our Top Record of 2025: Rosalía's Lux Takes the Number One Position.

On the surface, this work might appear closer to an arduous university quiz rather than the latest popular music record by a musician who just had a last single featured a global K-pop star. Divided into 4 distinct movements and performed in 13 tongues, it is a dizzying symphonic work investigating feminine mystery, religious ascent, and physical transformation, frequently through the prism of various saintly figures. The end of a relationship—a topic handled with grounded honesty elsewhere—soars skyward on this record, buoyed by the lush sound of a major orchestra and contributions from an award-winning composer among an extensive roll call of collaborators. The pure daring alone renders the efforts of other artists look rather laughable.

Transcending Academic Exercise

The fact that Lux manages to escape dry academic posturing is nearly a miracle, and sole credit going to the artist. Although it's not her first album to alchemize historical sounds with the present, its scale are far greater here, with the balancing act more dramatic. The element that truly elevates this fourth album, beyond its complex melodies, rich compositions, and engrained drama, proves to be an essential sense of playfulness. Similar to the iconic artist at her peak, you find a wondrous sense to the vocalist's voice which sweeps you up in its whirlwind. When she is tearing your heart in two, you still desire to stay right there for the ride.

A Prime Example of Exuberance

That playful energy shines brightly on a stunning Italian song about Saint Clare. It luxuriates in a string-drenched melancholy over several minutes. Then, all the music falls away, and we hear a spontaneous laugh followed by a declaration before a hilariously exaggerated orchestral crescendo thuds down with comedic impact. The track immediately segues to the wild track featuring galloping orchestration, a powerful choir, and a surprise appearance from none other than Björk.

"The charm of Lux is that the listener never exactly know—nor wish to know—what it will go next."

Nearly each song finishes in a totally distinct place than how it started. A track examines the fleeting nature of fame with a delicate orchestration before collapsing in digital chaos. Elsewhere, a song that recalls her earlier trap-infused style starts out moody and brooding, featuring menacing vocals, until sudden traditional rhythms and an angelic choir enter to soften the song's rough edges.

The Bridge Between Experiment & Pop

A key achievement on the album is navigating the line between radical experimentation and broad appeal. This is no surprise that it has achieved the artist's highest-charting work to crack the Top 5 of key markets: its heart contains a suite of utterly catchy pop songs. One track sung primarily in the English language builds on a chorus that seems to gather increasingly infectious melodies while it spins skyward. That feat is echoed on another powerful track that expands and contracts, weaving layered tunes as an intricate tapestry.

  • A waltz-like song seduces with its playful, Disney-adjacent drama and a chant-along hook.
  • Lyrically, it shares with pop culture honesty of contemporary heartbreak anthems, eviscerating a former partner labeled an "psychological terrorist".
  • Throughout the album, the vocals have a painted-on smile, akin to a storybook figure concealing a blade: "Top prize in acting like a scoundrel / You have won the trophy of letdown."

A Maximalist Feast for the Ears

This album is pop on a maximalist scale, a hungry grasp for high Art amid of looming artificial blankness. It eschews self-absorption in favor of glorious transcendence, creating an over-the-top drama that masterfully controls its inherent ridiculousness. It is a deep well of hidden treasure that takes patience to fully mine but doesn't seem like a chore. While other big releases of 2025 felt like a meager scraps, this record is a sumptuous feast at which the characters around it, perhaps tipsy on holy drink, flit between discussions about ancient saints, the galvanizing feeling of soul-shattering sadness, and common gossip about useless partners. It is a contemporary theatrical production from music's truly restlessly creative practitioner.
