RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through intelligence, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was situated in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a number of entry passages providing entry to the site... early reports suggest the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the operation on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed extremist governance over parts of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike underscores British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

UK warplanes have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of IS subsequent to its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of the UK armed forces participating in this mission for their expertise and their courage," the Defence Secretary commented. "Including them were thousands of British personnel stationed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our safety, demonstrates how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."

During December, the United States armed forces conducted what it called a "major assault" on Islamic State objectives in the country, after an ambush claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports Daesh still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
